Horatio Alger Scholarships

Due May 15, 2024

The Horatio Alger Association provides financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have significant financial need ($65,000 or less gross family income)and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.

Leah S. Vines Scholarship

Due May 1, 2024

To apply, submit an application to the Leah S. Vines Scholarship Committee.

Students must be worthy of the scholarship as determined by the Scholarship Committee. Student must be a resident of Edgecombe, Pitt, Nash, Wilson, Wake, and Orange County

(North Carolina), or have roots within one of these counties. Roots meaning immediate family member.


Requirements are as follows:

--High school graduate with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

--Acceptance letter from a 4 year accredited college or university.


Major in one of the following:

--Design (architecture, product design, industrial design, or graphic design.)

--Business Administration.

--Natural Sciences, (chemistry, biology, physics, earth science, bio-chemistry, or engineering.


Submit a one page typed essay (300 words or less); communicate why you should be awarded this scholarship.   Submit at least 2 letters of recommendation from your high school teachers or staff members written on your behalf.


Mail application, transcript and letters of recommendation, copy of acceptance letter from the college you will attend. Must be postmarked by May 1 of the given year.

Edgecombe County Farm Bureau Scholarship

Due April 18, 2024

Edgecombe County Farm Bureau Scholarship is offering a one-time scholarship worth $2,000 for first-time college students attending an agriculture university or community college.  


*$2,000 Scholarship

*Parents must be Farm Bureau members

*A potential recipient must demonstrate:  an intention to pursue a career in Agriculture or agriculture related field; satisfactory grades; good character, leadership potential, extracurricular activities or community service activities


Application deadline is April 18th, 2024.  Must include the application, recent photograph, ACT/SAT scores and official transcript.  Applications can be found in your school email or see Mrs. Gay.


Junior Guild Scholarship

Due April 15, 2024

The Junior Guild Scholarship was established to fund young women residing in the Rocky Mount area who desire to attend a four-year college or university.  The scholarship is based on financial need, scholastic excellence and outstanding citizenship


The recipient is required to meet the following requirements:

1) The recipient must remain a full-time student (as that term is defined by the recipient’s college or university of choice) in good standing academically for the four undergraduate years.

2) The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or above for each semester to receive their money.

3) The recipient must maintain high standards of citizenship and conduct.

4) The recipient must use the scholarship during four consecutive academic undergraduate years unless the Junior Guild Board of Directors grants an exception.


The recipient must supply a certified copy of her grade to the Rocky Mount Junior Guild each quarter or semester, and must request renewal of the Scholarship in writing to the Scholarship Chairman by July 1 of each year.  Failure to fulfill the academic and citizenship requirements of the Junior Guild Scholarship may result in probation for one semester or quarter, with terms thereof to be determined on an individual basis by the Junior Guild Scholarship Committee.  The Scholarship may be terminated if the recipient does not fulfill the terms of her probation.


Each applicant must submit the attached application form, accompanied by the following items AND BE TIME STAMPED SUBMITTED BY APRIL 15, 2024


- Most recent certified high school transcript

- SAT or ACT scores

- Photograph of applicant

- Three letters of reference, at least one of which is from a teacher, principal, or counselor, and one from outside the student’s school experience.  **Letters must be signed**

- An original, typed essay of at least 350 words describing where the applicant would like to be and what the applicant would like to be doing ten years from now

- FAFSA


***It is imperative that all applicants name their uploaded documents as Last Name_First Name_Document Name.  For example, when uploading the essay, the file should be saved and uploaded as Sharron_Barnes_Essay.  This is true for all scanned documents as well.

Meant 2 Be Men Scholarship

The Meant 2 Be Men scholarship aims to acknowledge and promote academic

excellence, exemplary character, active community service, and responsible citizenship among young males. The scholarships are designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who can derive significant benefits from pursuing higher education. The scholarship amount ranges from $250 to $1000, depending on the total funds available, and will be evenly distributed among selected recipients. Payments will be issued as live checks to each awardee, intended for

use in college preparation. 


To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must fulfill the following criteria: submission of a completed application form, a 300+ word essay, and a copy of the College Acceptance letter.

The application deadline is April 26, 2024, and all submissions should be made to your school counselor. 


Award announcements are expected to be made in May. 


Notably, the M2BM Scholarship for the current year will be granted to 8 students from Edgecombe County Public School (Southwest High School) and 8 students from Nash County Public School (Rocky Mount High School).

Jack C. and Hattie M. Williams Perseverance Scholarship

What is the Jack C. and Hattie M. Williams Perseverance Scholarship?


This is an annual scholarship in honor of Jack C. Williams and Hattie M. Williams for their abilities to consistently apply a variety of tools to overcome and work through difficult situations while showing impeccable character.  The scholarship will provide financial assistance to two eligible seniors (one male and one female) who will attend a community college, 4-year university, or trade school and who demonstrates determination and grit to achieve success while overcoming obstacles.  Two scholarships will be awarded each in the amount of $1,000. 


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 





GENERAL INFORMATION: 


Candidates for this scholarship must submit a typed essay of 1000 words or less that explains how he/she persevered through a difficult situation and maintained good character.  Scholarships can be used at any institution of recipient’s choice and may be used at the student’s discretion.  Scholarship winners will be announced at Senior Awards Night in May and recipients will receive a letter and a certified check from Lula W. Wallace.

Epsilon Sigma Lambada Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship

Thank you for your interest in pursuing the academic scholarship funded by the Epsilon Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Each year our Fraternity, through its Educational Foundation, provides a scholarship valued at $1,000 to a deserving student in the Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash-Rocky Mount & Wilson  Counties.

The guidelines for these scholarships are listed below. If you believe you satisfy these requirements, we ask that you apply for one of our scholarships by completing the enclosed application packet.  APPLICATION EMAIL WAS SENT TO ALL STUDENTS BY MRS. GAY.  CHECK YOUR EMAIL! 

Below is a summary of our scholarship criteria and next steps:

Criteria:

Applicants must be a graduating senior male and must enroll in a four-year College or University immediately upon graduating from high school.

 Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (weighted).

Complete Scholarship Packets Must Include

1. A completed copy of the Scholarship Application (prefer that you type it).

2. Two letters of recommendation – one of which must come from a representative of your high school.   Complete the appropriate information on your reference forms and forward them to two people who will serve in these roles for you. One reference must be from the academic community (Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, or Counselor.) Your second letter of recommendation should be from a community member (Pastor, mentor, scout leader, etc.)   Your recommendation letters and forms should accompany your application packet when it is returned.

3. An updated copy of your official high school transcript

4. A copy of your official SAT or ACT scores (Optional)

5. A 1-3 page, double-spaced-typed essay in 12-point font with one-inch margins on the following topic:  How can communities, schools, and society as a whole work together to dismantle the negative depictions and stereotypes bestowed upon young boys of color? What can you personally do?

(Note: Please do not deviate from this essay topic. See attached essay scoring rubric for additional details.)

Next Steps

 All application packets received by the deadline will be reviewed to ensure that all required information has been submitted.

 All applicants with complete application packets will be contacted via e-mail or phone to schedule an in-person or virtual interview with the scholarship committee in late April; early May.

A Friendly Word of Advice

Remember that it takes time to gather all of the information that you need. Please follow all of the instructions outlined in this letter and/or other Alpha Phi Alpha scholarship application materials. Any application packets without the five items outlined in this letter will be considered incomplete and, unfortunately, students will be ineligible to be invited for an interview.

John & Mary Perry Memorial Scholarships

Humanitarian Scholarship  - for students in 9-11 grade in good academic standing; two letters of recommendation required with application

Ebonette Club of Tarboro

Three scholarships are offered by the Ebonette Club of Tarboro.  You can check your email or see me if you need a paper copy. 


There are 2 scholarships for seniors who will attend a 4-year school.  They both are $1000 scholarships, one is merit based (3.0 GPA), the other is need based (no GPA requirement).  Students may only apply for one of these.  


The other is a scholarship for seniors who will attend a 2-year school/community college.



The deadline for the applications is April 15th.  Applications should be turned in to Mrs. Gay. 


Edwards Family Reunion Scholarship

The Edwards Family Reunion Scholarship is open to SWEHS students.  Please check your email or see Mrs. Gay for the application.   You must be attending college and have a 2.5 GPA.

The following must accompany your application:

-fully completed and signed application

-verification of Community Service/Volunteerism

-College Acceptance Letter

- Official Transcript

-Two letters of Recommendation

-Essay on topic: “What Family Means to Me”  This essay should be one-page, double-spaced with 1-inch margins, and 12-point Times Roman Font. The essay should be written independently and represent your originality and reflect your thoughts. Please “sign” the essay and date it.

The application packets should be postmarked by April 19, 2024.

ECC EDGE Scholarship

The EDGE scholarship is now available.  This scholarship is for Edgecombe Community College only and covers tuition and books.

The Pilot Club of Tarboro will give two $500 scholarships to students in Edgecombe County.  Special consideration will be given to students interested in the fields of medicine, social work or the education of special populations.
